Inter-Regional Cycling Schools Meeting May 2026

Almancilense Cycling School took part in the Inter-Regional Road Cycling Schools Meeting – Zone B, held on 23 May at the Ajuda University Campus in Lisbon.

The event brought together around 150 young riders from different cycling schools and age groups for an afternoon of youth cycling, learning, competition and shared experiences. More than just a race, events like this give young cyclists the chance to gain valuable experience, put their skills to the test and ride alongside athletes from other teams.

“Every training session teaches us something, every race challenges us, and every experience helps us grow.”

Learning through competition

Inter-regional events play an important role in the development of young riders. By taking part in races suited to their age and level of experience, children and young people can develop in an appropriate competitive environment where results are not the only goal.

For Almancilense Cycling School, these experiences are part of the learning process. Competing gives young riders the chance to discover new courses, deal with different race situations, learn how to manage their effort and build confidence on the bike.

At the same time, it helps develop values that we consider essential in the growth of any young athlete: respect, discipline, dedication, teamwork and sportsmanship.

These events help young riders to:

  • gain experience in a competitive environment;
  • develop bike handling and technical skills;
  • learn how to manage effort and concentration;
  • meet and interact with riders from other cycling schools;
  • respect rules, teammates and opponents;
  • build independence and confidence.

A format designed for every age group

The event programme was structured progressively, with challenges adapted to each age group.

For the Under-7 and Under-9 categories, the focus was on skills exercises and sprinting, helping young riders develop bike control while giving them a first taste of competition in a simple and positive way.

In the Under-11 category, the programme combined technical exercises, a skills test and a road race, allowing riders to begin applying what they had learned in a more structured competitive setting.

For the Under-13 and Under-15 categories, the level of difficulty increased, with longer and more demanding road races and, for the older riders, individual time trial efforts.

This gradual progression is important because it ensures that each rider faces challenges suited to their age, experience and stage of development.

“When different cycling schools come together, the sport also becomes a space for sharing and community.”

Much more than results

Of course, competition comes with rankings, times and results. But at these ages, what each young rider learns from the experience is often more important than the final position.

Taking part in an event with dozens of riders, listening to coaches, preparing for the start, dealing with nerves, making decisions during the race and completing a challenge are all experiences that help shape a more complete cyclist.

For some young riders, these events are also their first steps into competitive cycling. That is why we believe they should take place in a positive environment where there is room to learn, make mistakes, improve and try again.

More than the final result, we value:

  • each rider’s progress;
  • their attitude during the race;
  • respect for other participants;
  • the ability to overcome challenges;
  • the desire to keep learning;
  • the joy of riding.

Families and teams are part of the journey too

The atmosphere at the Ajuda University Campus also highlighted the important role played by families and coaching staff throughout this process.

The support of parents, coaches and teammates helps create an environment where young riders feel supported and motivated. Youth cycling is not built only during the minutes of a race. It develops through training sessions, travel, preparation, relationships with teammates and all the small moments surrounding each event.

When different cycling schools come together, there is also an opportunity to build connections, share experiences and strengthen the sense of belonging to something bigger: the cycling community.

“Representing the school means carrying with us the values we learn in every training session.”

The importance of cycling schools

Events like this highlight the important role cycling schools play in shaping the future of the sport.

For many young riders, cycling schools provide their first structured introduction to the sport. It is here that they learn the technical basics, develop training habits, discover competition and begin to understand the values that come with sport.

Some may go on to follow a more demanding competitive path. Others may simply carry a love of cycling with them throughout their lives. Both paths are equally valuable.

For Almancilense Cycling School, promoting and taking part in events like these means contributing to a more complete learning experience, where athletic development goes hand in hand with personal growth.

Representing Almancil away from home

Taking part in an inter-regional event in Lisbon is also an opportunity for our young riders to carry the name of Almancil with them and represent the school beyond our region.

Every event brings a new experience, but it is also a chance to show the work that goes into each training session, the commitment of our riders and families, and the support of everyone helping this project grow.

It is through moments like these that young riders learn that being part of a team also means representing its values both on and off the road.

Keep learning, race after race

The Inter-Regional Road Cycling Schools Meeting – Zone B once again showed that youth cycling is about much more than results.

It is a space to learn, compete, make friends, gain experience and discover new abilities.

Almancilense Cycling School will continue to encourage its young riders to take part in events like these, because we believe that every training session teaches, every race challenges and every experience helps us grow.

We keep riding, learning and improving together.
