Learning, developing and growing on two wheels
Talking about cycling in Almancil, in the Algarve, means talking about sport, development, community, and a relationship with the bicycle that can begin at a very young age.
At Almancil Cycling, cycling is seen as much more than competition. It is an opportunity for children and young people to improve their bike-handling skills, gain confidence, develop independence, and grow in an environment where team spirit, respect, and the desire to improve are part of every training session.
Almancil’s location, close to different communities across the municipality of Loulé and some of the Algarve’s areas most closely connected to sport and outdoor life, also creates a special setting in which to develop a cycling culture that is increasingly connected to families and young people.
A Cycling School in Almancil
The Almancilense Cycling School exists to bring children and young people closer to cycling and provide them with a place where they can learn, practise and develop progressively.
Not everyone arrives with the same level of experience.
Some young riders are still discovering cycling. Others have already mastered the fundamentals and want to improve their technique, become more independent or start taking part in competitions.
This diversity is part of the learning process.
What matters is that each young rider finds challenges suited to their starting point and can progress without losing sight of what should always be present: the joy of cycling.
At our cycling school, we aim to develop:
- cycling technique and bike control;
- confidence;
- independence;
- safety;
- responsibility;
- respect;
- team spirit.
Learning to Ride Better Starts with Technique
When a child starts cycling, speed should not be the first priority.
Before riding faster, it is important to learn how to control the bicycle.
Balance, riding position, braking, cornering and changing direction are some of the skills developed progressively. These fundamentals enable young riders to face more demanding situations with greater safety and confidence.
During Almancil Cycling’s training sessions, learning takes place mainly through practice.
Young riders experiment, make adjustments, repeat exercises and take on challenges suited to their individual experience.
Learning the fundamentals properly helps young riders to:
- control the bicycle more effectively;
- react more safely;
- gain confidence;
- make better decisions;
- prepare for progressively more demanding challenges.
Cycling Training for Children and Young People
Training sessions are a central part of the school’s work.
Rather than simply repeating exercises, each session focuses on specific skills and presents young riders with situations in which they need to observe, decide and act.
One exercise may focus on improving braking. Another may develop balance or quick changes of direction. A short circuit can combine several skills and bring the learning process closer to real-life cycling situations.
Progress happens step by step.
A young rider who needs help completing an exercise today may be able to do it completely independently a few weeks later. It is precisely this progression that helps build confidence.
Cycling as a School for Life
One of the most important aspects of youth cycling development goes beyond technical skills.
Training as part of a group teaches young riders to wait for their teammates, follow guidance, face challenges, and understand that not everyone progresses at the same pace.
It also teaches them how to win and lose.
A race may end with a medal, a lower-than-expected result, or simply the satisfaction of completing a challenge that once seemed difficult.
All these experiences are part of the learning process.
That is why, at Almancil Cycling, we believe that developing cyclists also means helping young people become more independent, responsible and confident.
Cycling can help develop:
- perseverance;
- discipline;
- the ability to overcome difficulties;
- respect for others;
- responsibility;
- team spirit.
Competing Is Also Part of Learning
Taking part in cycling events, festivals and competitions allows young riders to apply what they have learned during training in a different setting.
Over the past few years, the Almancilense Cycling School has participated in various development events and competitions, both within and beyond the Algarve.
Events such as the Eng.º Brito da Mana Track Cycling Festival in Tavira and the Inter-Regional Road Cycling Schools Meeting in Lisbon represent much more than an opportunity to achieve results.
They are opportunities to gain experience, meet riders from other cycling schools, face new challenges, and learn how to manage the emotions that come with competition.
Through these experiences, young riders also come to understand that representing a team means upholding values such as respect, dedication and sportsmanship.
“Results fade. Confidence, experience and memories remain.”
Women’s Cycling Is Also Growing in Almancil
Developing cycling in Almancil also means creating more opportunities for girls.
The Ride Like a Champion project — the Women’s Cycling Development Programme in Almancil, supported by the Portuguese Olympic Committee — aims to increase female participation and create better conditions for new athletes to discover the sport.
In a sport still traditionally dominated by men, our cycling school shows that it is possible to build a different path.
Of the 19 young registered athletes included in the project, 12 are girls, representing approximately 63% of the group.
Our goal is to continue opening doors and enable more young people to experience cycling in an inclusive, supportive and welcoming environment.
Cycling, Community and Mobility
Cycling does not exist only within training sessions or competitions.
The bicycle is also part of a broader conversation about mobility, safety and quality of life in our communities.
It was in this spirit that Almancil hosted a Kidical Mass initiative in June 2026, dedicated to active mobility and the need to create better conditions for children, young people, cyclists, pedestrians and people with reduced mobility.
More cycle lanes, appropriate speed limits, safe crossings and greater respect for vulnerable road users help create places where cycling can become a more natural and safer choice.
For those who work with young cyclists every day, this issue is particularly important.
A child may learn to control a bicycle very well, but their safety also depends on how we all share the road.
“A cyclist is not an obstacle. A cyclist is a person.”
Almancil and the Algarve: A Place to Cycle
The Algarve has a strong connection to outdoor activities, sport and cycling.
In Almancil, that connection can begin at an early age.
Creating opportunities for children and young people to discover cycling also means contributing to a more active community, encouraging healthier lifestyles and fostering a closer connection to the local area.
Not every young person who joins a cycling school will become a competitive athlete.
Nor do they need to.
For some, cycling may become a sporting passion. For others, it may simply become an activity they enjoy throughout their lives.
Both are important outcomes.
A Cycling School Built by the Community
A youth development project cannot grow on its own.
Behind every training session, bicycle, journey and event lies the support of families, coaches, volunteers, businesses and institutions.
Almancil Cycling’s sponsors and partners help create better conditions for the project to continue growing and enable more young people to access the sport.
It is also possible to support the cycling school through donations or initiatives designed to improve the facilities and equipment available to our athletes.
Every contribution can create a new opportunity.
A bicycle.
A journey.
The chance to take part in a competition.
Or simply the opportunity for another child to start cycling.
